Ciao bella Italia! For years, the image of ancient ruins, mouthwatering pasta, and sun-drenched coastlines danced in my head. Finally, I turned that dream into a reality with an unforgettable two-week journey through Italy, focusing primarily on the captivating city of Rome, with a side trip to the energetic Naples and the enchanting Sorrento. Let me share my adventure and inspire your own Italian escape!

Part 1: Roma – The Eternal City (Days 1-7)
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither can you truly experience it in just a few. My first week was dedicated to immersing myself in the historical heart of Italy.
- Ancient Wonders: Of course, no trip to Rome is complete without visiting the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Standing in the arena where gladiators once battled and walking among the ruins of a once-mighty empire was truly awe-inspiring. Book your tickets online in advance to skip the notoriously long lines! Don’t forget Palatine Hill for panoramic views of the Forum.
- Vatican City: A city within a city, Vatican City is a must-see. St. Peter’s Basilica is breathtaking in its grandeur, and climbing to the dome offers unparalleled views of Rome. The Vatican Museums, home to the Sistine Chapel, are a treasure trove of art and history. Again, pre-booking tickets is essential. Dress respectfully – shoulders and knees should be covered.
- Trevi Fountain & Spanish Steps: Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure your return to Rome (or so the legend goes!). The Spanish Steps, a beautiful Baroque staircase, are perfect for people-watching. Enjoy a gelato while soaking in the atmosphere.
- Pantheon & Piazza Navona: The Pantheon, with its impressive dome and oculus, is an architectural marvel. Piazza Navona, a lively baroque square, features Bernini’s Fountain of Four Rivers and is a great place to relax and enjoy the street performers.
- Trastevere Charm: Escape the tourist crowds by wandering through the charming cobblestone streets of Trastevere. This neighborhood is known for its bohemian atmosphere, artisan shops, and traditional trattorias. Enjoy a delicious Roman dinner here – cacio e pepe and carbonara are local specialties you can’t miss!
Food Highlights in Rome: Beyond the classic pasta dishes, indulge in crispy supplì (fried rice balls), savory Roman-style pizza (thin and crispy), and of course, plenty of gelato. Explore local markets like Campo de’ Fiori for fresh produce and local delicacies.
Part 2: Naples – A Taste of Southern Italy (Days 8-10)
A high-speed train whisked me away from Rome to the vibrant and chaotic city of Naples in just over an hour. Naples is a sensory overload in the best way possible – a city brimming with history, culture, and incredible food.
- Historic Center (Centro Storico): Get lost in the narrow, winding streets of Naples’ historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Discover hidden churches, bustling markets, and the authentic spirit of Neapolitan life.
- Pizza Perfection: Naples is the birthplace of pizza, and you simply cannot leave without trying the real deal. From classic Margherita to more adventurous toppings, the pizza here is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is a legendary spot, but be prepared for a queue!
- National Archaeological Museum: Home to an impressive collection of Roman artifacts, including mosaics and sculptures from Pompeii and Herculaneum, this museum is a must for history buffs.
- Castel Nuovo & Piazza del Plebiscito: Explore the impressive medieval castle, Castel Nuovo, and stroll through the grand Piazza del Plebiscito, surrounded by majestic colonnades and the Royal Palace.
Food Highlights in Naples: Beyond pizza, try the creamy buffalo mozzarella, the flavorful ragù napoletano (slow-cooked meat sauce), and the sweet sfogliatella pastry. Don’t forget to grab a strong Neapolitan coffee!

Part 3: Sorrento – Coastal Beauty (Days 11-13)
A scenic train or ferry ride from Naples will take you to the charming coastal town of Sorrento, perched on cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples.
- Relax and Enjoy the Views: Sorrento is all about soaking in the stunning scenery. Take a stroll along the Villa Comunale for breathtaking views of the coastline, Mount Vesuvius, and the Isle of Capri.
- Explore the Old Town: Wander through the narrow streets of Sorrento’s historic center, lined with lemon groves, artisan shops selling local crafts and limoncello, and charming cafes.
- Day Trip to Capri: Take a ferry to the glamorous island of Capri. Visit the Blue Grotto (if the weather permits), explore the charming towns of Capri and Anacapri, and enjoy the breathtaking views from Monte Solaro.
- Beaches and Swimming: While Sorrento’s coastline is mostly rocky, there are several beaches and swimming platforms where you can enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean.
Food Highlights in Sorrento: Indulge in fresh seafood, pasta with lemon sauce, and of course, plenty of limoncello, the region’s famous lemon liqueur.
Part 4: Back to Rome (Day 14)
My Italian adventure concluded with a train journey back to Rome, leaving me with a heart full of memories and a camera roll bursting with photos. I spent my last day revisiting a favorite spot – the Borghese Gallery and Gardens – and enjoying one last delicious Roman dinner.
Travel Tips for Your Italian Adventure:
- Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Summer can be hot and crowded, while winter can be mild but some attractions may have reduced hours.
- Transportation: Italy has an excellent train system, making it easy to travel between cities. Within cities, utilize the metro, buses, and trams. Walking is also a great way to explore, especially in historic centers.
- Accommodation: Choose accommodation based on your budget and preferences. Rome offers a wide range of options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious hotels. In Naples and Sorrento, consider staying in the historic centers for easy access to attractions.
- Book in Advance: Especially for popular attractions like the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and train tickets, booking in advance is highly recommended to avoid long queues and ensure availability.
- Learn Basic Italian Phrases: While many people in tourist areas speak English, knowing a few basic Italian phrases like “Ciao” (hello), “Grazie” (thank you), and “Prego” (you’re welcome) will be appreciated.
- Embrace the Culture: Be prepared for a slightly different pace of life. Enjoy leisurely meals, embrace the chaos of Naples, and soak in the beauty and history that surrounds you.
My two weeks in Italy were a dream come true. From the ancient grandeur of Rome to the vibrant energy of Naples and the coastal charm of Sorrento, each destination offered a unique and unforgettable experience. If you’re dreaming of an Italian getaway, I highly recommend this itinerary as a starting point for your own adventure. Buon viaggio!
